JSCCC Hong Kong Tour 7 – 11 December 2009
The CCC has developed a professional working relationship with the Independent Commission Against Corruption of Hong Kong (”ICAC”). From the 7th – 11th of December 2009, the Western Australian Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on the Corruption and Crime Commission (”JSCCCC”) went to Hong Kong to develop a greater understanding of ICAC and to foster a deeper professional working relationship. Chairman of the JSCCCC Hon Nick Goiran MLC stated that the trip was highly beneficial, “For most of our committee members, this was the first time they’d witnessed corruption being dealt with in an international setting.” The tour was characterised by a tight schedule together with a specific focus on the distinction between fighting corruption and fighting crime, particularly organised crime. “One of the things I certainly take from this experience is the clear distinction in Hong Kong where the police are charged with fighting crime whereas ICAC is charged with fighting corruption.”
