Be “Pro” Active – our Kids Need it
“Let’s get active with our kids” was the advice given by Member for the South Metropolitan Region the Honourable Nick Goiran MLC.
Research findings by the Federal Department of Health and Ageing: indicate that physical inactivity is the second biggest cause of illness in Australia. New recommendations state that children should spend no more than two hours in front of the television and video games but should engage in physical activity to combat the rising obesity epidemic.
“This sounds like common sense to me”, said the Honourable Nick Goiran when asked about these findings, ”but there is clearly a need for activities for children throughout WA – and this is not an issue limited to remote areas.”
The Member for the South Metropolitan Region adds another recommendation – adults should lead by example “If a poor example of physical inactivity is set by parents – why would children think any differently?”
These Federal Government recommendations coincide with an announcement that Sport and recreation programs will play an important role in the State Government’s plan to tackle anti-social behaviour in Northbridge.
“Sport can be a really effective method of engaging young people and, once engaged, they can be provided with other learning opportunities.” Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron said, “Great examples of this are the Midnight Basketball tournaments that have been running in Geraldton and Midland, and in the near future, Kwinana.”
The Physical benefits of activity are obvious – it is the resultant sense of achievement and self confidence that might just proactively prevent crime.
